A new source of renewable energy which could revolutionise the way we heat our homes is set to be launched by a small business near Penicuik.
The inventors, David Anderson and Charles Silverton, both former scientists, say the £1,500 rooftop-placed generator is silent, about the same size as a satellite dish and is able to provide a household with constant hot water for no extra cost.
Renewable Devices, the Midlothian firm started by the former colleagues last May, is set to begin a series of 50 demonstrations around the country, in a bid to attract commercial interest. The invention is expected to generate £500,000 turnover over the next 12 months, in a market potentially worth millions.
"Previous wind turbines were extremely noisy, about 10ft tall and used to charge batteries - very messy and unwieldy," he explained. "Our prototype works like a solar panel - installed on the roof and directing wind energy straight to the water tank."
They quit their jobs last May to found the business, which was awarded a government ‘ Smart 2002' funding package worth £45,000 in September. Anderson estimates the firm will become self-sustainable sometime next year.
